How To Install A Sink

Have you ever considered upgrading your bathroom or kitchen with a new sink? Installing a sink can seem like a big job, but with the right tools, patience, and some basic know-how, it’s a project that almost anyone can tackle. That’s why we put together a step-by-step guide to help you install a new sink confidently. Let’s get started!

What You’ll Need:

  • New sink
  • Faucet (if installing a new one)
  • Plumber’s putty
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Basin wrench
  • Pipe wrench
  • Bucket
  • Pipe tape (Teflon tape)
  • Silicone sealant
  • Supply lines
  • P-trap kit (if needed)

Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply: Before doing anything, turn off the water supply to the sink. You’ll typically find shutoff valves under the sink. Turn them clockwise to close. Open the faucet to relieve pressure and drain water from the lines.

Pro Tip: Place a bucket under the sink to catch any water that might spill when disconnecting the plumbing.

Step 2: Disconnect the Old Sink:

  • Disconnect the water supply lines from the faucet using an adjustable wrench.
  • Disconnect the drain pipe. You may need a pipe wrench if it’s tightly secured.
  • Carefully remove any clips or fasteners securing the old sink to the countertop.
  • Lift the old sink out carefully.

If the sink is caulked in place, you may need to cut through the caulk with a utility knife.

Step 3: Prepare the Area: Once the old sink is removed:

  • Scrape away any old caulk or putty.
  • Clean the surface thoroughly so the new sink will sit flat and seal properly.

Step 4: Install the Faucet and Drain (Before Placing the Sink): It’s much easier to install the faucet and drain assembly before setting the sink into place.

  • Attach the faucet according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Apply plumber’s putty around the drain opening and set the drain flange into the hole.
  • Tighten the drain assembly underneath the sink.

Step 5: Set the New Sink:

  • Apply a bead of silicone sealant around the edge of the opening in your countertop.
  • Lower the sink into place and press down firmly.
  • If your sink comes with mounting clips, attach them underneath to secure it.
  • Wipe away any excess sealant that squeezes out with a damp cloth.

Step 6: Connect the Plumbing:

  • Attach the supply lines to the faucet and the shutoff valves. Use pipe tape on threaded connections to help prevent leaks.
  • Install the P-trap and connect it to the drainpipe.
  • Tighten all connections securely, but avoid over-tightening, which can damage fittings.

Step 7: Test for Leaks:

  • Turn the water supply back on slowly.
  • Open the faucet and check all connections for leaks.
  • Tighten any fittings if necessary.

Final Touches: Once you’re confident, there are no leaks:

  • Apply a final silicone bead around the sink’s edge for a clean, watertight seal.
  • Clean up any excess silicone.
