How To Patch Drywall

Drywall holes are one of the most common household repairs, whether caused by doorknobs, accidents, or kids being kids. The good news? Most drywall damage is easily fixable with a few tools and the proper technique. As your trusted local contracting company, we’re here to guide you through a simple process for repairing drywall holes of all sizes, so your walls look as good as new.

What You’ll Need:

  • Drywall patch (or scrap drywall)
  • Utility knife
  • Drywall saw
  • Joint compound (spackle or mud)
  • Putty knife or drywall knife
  • Sandpaper or sanding block
  • Paint and primer
  • Mesh tape (for medium to large holes)

Step 1: Assess the Damage:

  • Small holes (under 1/2 inch): Think nail holes or minor dents.
  • Medium holes (1/2 inch to 6 inches): Often caused by door handles or minor impacts.
  • Large holes (6 inches and up): May need structural support and a drywall patch.

Step 2: Clean and Prep the Area: Use a utility knife to remove any loose drywall, peeling paint, or rough edges around the hole. For larger holes, cut the area into a neat square or rectangle—it’s easier to patch a clean shape.

Step 3: Patch the Hole:

For Small Holes:

  • Apply spackle with a putty knife.
  • Let dry and lightly sand.
  • Repeat if needed for a smooth finish.

For Medium Holes:

  • Place a self-adhesive mesh patch over the hole.
  • Apply a thin layer of joint compound, feathering the edges.
  • Let dry, sand, and apply a second coat if necessary.

For Large Holes:

  • Cut a new piece of drywall to fit the hole.
  • Use mesh tape around the seams.
  • Apply joint compound over the tape and edges.
  • Smooth with a drywall knife and let dry
  • Sand, then apply a second (and possibly third) coat for a flush finish.

Step 4: Sand Smooth: Once the compound is fully dry, gently sand the area with a sanding block or fine-grit sandpaper until smooth and level with the wall surface.

Step 5: Prime and Paint: Apply primer to seal the repaired area and prevent flashing through the paint. Once dry, paint the patch to match your wall color—and just like that, no one will know the damage was ever there!

When to Call a Pro: If the drywall is cracked due to water damage, improper installation, or structural issues, it’s best to have a professional inspect it. Luckily, Bravo Team Contracting handles all types of drywall repairs, big or small, ensuring long-lasting results and a seamless finish.
