How To Replace Your Shower Head

How To Replace Your Shower Head

Upgrading your shower head is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to improve your bathroom experience. Whether you want better water pressure, a rainfall feature, or just a modern look, installing a new shower head is a quick project that most homeowners can tackle in under 30 minutes.

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you get the job done right.

Tools & Materials You’ll Need:

  • New shower head
  • Adjustable wrench or pliers
  • Plumber’s tape (Teflon tape)
  • Rag or cloth
  • Optional: old toothbrush or vinegar for cleaning

Step 1: Remove the Old Shower Head: Use an adjustable wrench or pliers to loosen the old shower head by turning it counterclockwise. If it’s stuck, wrap a rag around the connector to protect the finish and get a better grip. Once it’s loose, unscrew it by hand and set it aside.

Step 2: Clean the Threads: Use a cloth or an old toothbrush to clean the threads of the shower arm (the pipe coming out of the wall). Remove any old plumber’s tape or buildup. If you notice corrosion or damage to the shower arm, this might be a good time to replace it as well.

Step 3: Apply Plumber’s Tape: Wrap plumber’s tape around the threads of the shower arm 2–3 times in a clockwise direction. This helps prevent leaks and ensures a snug fit. Press the tape into the threads so it forms a tight seal.

Step 4: Install the New Shower Head: Screw the new shower head onto the shower arm by hand, turning it clockwise. Make sure it’s straight and tight, but avoid over-tightening. If necessary, use your wrench to gently finish tightening—again, use a rag to protect the finish.

Step 5: Test for Leaks: Turn on the water and check for leaks around the connection. If you see dripping, gently tighten the shower head slightly or reapply plumber’s tape. Once it’s secure and leak-free, you’re all set!

Bonus Tips from Our Pros:

  • If you’re installing a handheld or multi-spray unit, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for assembling additional components.
  • Choose a WaterSense-labeled shower head to reduce water use without sacrificing pressure.
  • Always check your local plumbing codes when making upgrades.
